‘Game of Thrones’ Meme Bracket: Brace Yourself, Upsets Are Coming - The Ringer

What do you call an upset when it’s entirely foreseeable?

This is the question I’m left with, as after two days of voting and almost half a million ballots tallied, three no. 1 seeds remain, but none of them are the top overall seed entering the tourney. In a shocking defeat, Brace Yourself—a meme based on words Ned Stark, Lord of Winterfell and Lord Paramount of the North, never once uttered—fell to “You Know Nothing” by more than 1,000 votes.

Brace Yourself was the first meme in the Thrones canon. When it first came to prominence during the show’s inaugural season, the internet was a quieter place. Barack Obama was president, Facebook hadn’t yet purchased Instagram for a then-laughable $1 billion, and Chatroulette was still a thing parents worried about their kids checking on the family desktop.

The simplicity of Brace Yourself—a portrait of a leering Sean Bean, cloaked in pelts and carrying a Valyrian steel sword, with GIANT BLOCK LETTERS WITH NO OBVIOUS AESTHETIC VALUE covering half the screen—gave it a versatility that other memes lack. LeBron James lost his first Finals series with Miami just months after bolting for South Beach with an almost preposterous lack of self-awareness? Brace yourself, LeBron takes are coming. New Year’s Eve is right around the corner? You better brace yourself, because resolution posts are coming. The Republican nominee for vice president of the United States drops a series of wildly unnecessary workout photos in the middle of the campaign? If you’re not bracing yourself for that, I don’t know what you’d brace yourself for.

For a time, basic formulas like this one were all we needed to have fun online. Something funny, frustrating, or generally mundane happened in the world that was likely to rile some people up, and those with decent enough internet connection bolted to their meme generators to warn folks about the ensuing onslaught of posts. The public needed to be prepared. But times have changed. The blocky, gaudy lettering iconic to Brace Yourself feels of another time. The 24/7 nature of the internet makes having time to brace yourself seem outdated. And it shouldn’t be surprising that a meme centered around a character that was ceremoniously beheaded in 2011 suffered an early exit.

It was time for Brace Yourself to stand down as the de facto Lord of Thrones Memes. Perhaps Season 8 will deliver a new Stark Meme front-runner. But for now, kudos to Ygritte and “You Know Nothing.”

Voting for the Elite Eight is now open. You can cast your ballots here, on Twitter, and on Instagram until 5 p.m. Eastern. Game of Thrones taught us that heroes die early and often. Your votes did as much to kill Ned Stark as Ilyn Payne did. And just as Robb Stark rose in his place, so too will another dank Thrones meme.

Elite Eight

(4) “You Know Nothing” v. (3) Jon vs. Everyone

4.You Know Nothing”: If you’ve ever had an ex say something that still rattles around the inside of your skull like a DVD player’s screensaver, you know how deeply this phrase cuts our boy Jon. “You know nothing, Jon Snow” was Ygritte’s go-to putdown for her southern lover, and they were the final words she said to Jon as she lay dying in his arms. The phrase bothers Jon, but it also bothers actor Kit Harington, who does not understand what the phrase means.

I know what you’re thinking: “Jon Snow was in Pompeii?” But it’s either outstanding method acting or a terrible omen for his marriage to Rose Leslie, the actor who plays Ygritte.

3. Jon vs. Everyone: The premiere meme for any and all hot takes. Jon’s charge toward the Bolton cavalry in the Battle of the Bastards works for any controversial opinion because internet users are bloodthirsty spectators and social media is our virtual colosseum. When a great hot take enters the arena, it doesn’t matter who is unsheathing their sword against the galloping hordes of groupthink. It only matters that we are promised blood.

Don’t be surprised if this meme, like Jon, beats the odds.

(1) “Dracarys” v. (2) Drogon vs. Loot Train

1. “Dracarys”: Dany has done so much conquering, killing, city-razing, and slave-freeing over the years that it’s easy to forget how legendary her initial conquest was. She swaps a dragon for an Unsullied army as her advisors openly express doubt, reveals she speaks Valyrian, orders the Unsullied to kill the masters, and then says the word that puts the “fire” in “fire and blood.”

(1) Tyrion Dancing v. (6) Tyrion Slapping Joffrey

1. Tyrion Dancing: Tyrion’s trial in Season 4 is among the tensest scenes of the entire series. The bloopers, not so much.

I assume this is how Paul Manafort walked into his various trials.

6. Tyrion Slapping Joffrey: Nothing short of mesmerizing. It’s Game of Thrones ASMR.

2. Tormund and Brienne: The unrequited love that launched a thousand memes.

Trump's video tweet using Batman music removed due to copyright - BBC News

President Trump has had a video removed from Twitter because it unlawfully used the music from a Batman film.

The two-minute promotional video for his 2020 campaign used Hans Zimmer's track Why Do We Fall? from The Dark Knight Rises without requesting copyright from Warner Bros Pictures.

It was removed on Tuesday evening, hours after the video was posted on Mr Trump's account.

Over a million people had already seen the video before it was taken down.

It opened with images of Democrats including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, followed by text that read: "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they call you racist."

Then came video of key moments in Mr Trump's time as president, such as meeting North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un, the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and the Robert Mueller investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The video ended with a message saying "your vote proved them all wrong" and called the 2020 re-election "the great victory".

"The use of Warner Bros.' score from The Dark Knight Rises' in the campaign video was unauthorised," the company confirmed in a statement, before Twitter removed the video. "We are working through the appropriate legal channels to have it removed."

The video was then removed and replaced with a message saying: "This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner."

It is not the first time Mr Trump has been challenged over his use of artists' music.

In October, both Pharrell Williams and Prince's estate demanded that President Trump stop using the singers' music at political events.

Rihanna sent a cease and desist letter to Mr Trump after he used her track Don't Stop the Music at political events.

Steve Tyler from Aerosmith also complained when the president played the band's hit Living' On The Edge.

  • A video posted by President Donald Trump that uses music from Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" has been taken down.
  • It was removed after Warner Bros. Pictures filed a copyright infringement complaint over the video, BuzzFeed News reported.
  • A spokesperson told BuzzFeed News that the use of the music, composed for the 2012 film, was "unauthorized."
  • The video showed prominent Democrats and celebrities with the text: "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they call you racist."

A video shared by President Donald Trump featuring music from Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises" has been taken down, reportedly after a copyright claim from Warner Bros.

BuzzFeed News reported that Warner Bros. Pictures filed a copyright infringement complaint over the video, which Trump shared on Twitter on Tuesday with the caption "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

The video, which was seemingly released as part of Trump's 2020 re-election campaign can no longer be played on Twitter, and has been replaced by a copyright notice. The notice reads: "This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner."

The video in question, which had no voiceover or dialogue, showed Democratic figures like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, as well as prominent Democrat-backing celebrities like actor Bryan Cranston, and comedian and actress Amy Schumer.

At one point in the roughly two minutes long video, text is displayed, reading: "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they call you racist."

In a statement on Tuesday night — seemingly given prior to the video being taken down — a Warner Bros. spokesperson told BuzzFeed News that the use of the music was "unauthorized," and that the company was working to have it removed from social media.

"The use of Warner Bros.' score from The Dark Knight Rises in the campaign video was unauthorized," they said. "We are working through the appropriate legal channels to have it removed."

The 2012 film, directed by Christopher Nolan, had orginal music by composer Hans Zimmer, who is known for his dramatic movie scores, including Inception, Gladiator, and The Lion King.

Would a Home Birth for Meghan Markle Have Serious Risks? - The Cheat Sheet

Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they were expecting a baby, the world has been eager for any and all news about the new royal baby. Markle has attracted attention for everything from her chic pregnancy style to her all-natural approach to childbirth.

While the royal couple hasn’t really revealed much to the public about their actual birth plans, a new report suggests that Meghan Markle could take a unique approach to bring her baby into the world. But, are there additional risks?

Markle prefers to keep things natural

Well before her marriage to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was known as much for her love for health and wellness as for her acting skills. Markle likes to stick to organic foods, and reportedly keeps her and her husband’s fridge well-stocked with only the healthiest of treats. She also knows the importance of staying active, and practices yoga, which she is quite familiar with considering her mother is a yoga instructor.

Pregnancy causes many women to feel fatigued, and hardly up to the challenge of walking, much less exercising on a regular basis. Markle definitely doesn’t seem fazed by the struggles of pregnancy and has been traveling the world for her royal duties even while her baby bump grows larger and larger. Markle’s holistic approach to pregnancy includes outfitting the baby’s nursery in the finest materials, including, reportedly, eucalyptus-infused vegan paint on the walls to promote relaxation and calm.

How did Kate give birth?

While this is Meghan Markle’s first pregnancy, her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, is a pro. The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to three children since she’s been married to Prince William and likely has a lot of great advice for Markle about everything from the actual birth to recovery from labor.

It seems that in one way, at least, Markle’s childbirth experience could differ wildly from Middleton’s. Kate Middleton gave birth to all three of her children at St. Mary’s Hospital, in an exclusive, more private area called Lindo Wing. According to a new report, Meghan Markle is actually considering a home birth, shunning the use of the queen’s doctors to deliver her baby.

Would a home birth be safe for Markle?

Home births are a relatively popular choice in the United States and are catching on in the United Kingdom as well. They are not unprecedented in the royal family either, as Queen Elizabeth actually gave birth to her four children either at home in Buckingham Palace, or her smaller residence, Clarence House. Although home births are growing in popularity, there are still some misconceptions about the process. Many people still feel that home births are unsafe, but there are actually very minimal risks with home births, and in several ways, they can be considered safer than hospital births.

One positive aspect of home birth is the reduced risk of infection. Giving birth in a hospital setting means that the mother and baby are surrounded by hundreds of other people, some that have illnesses or other issues that could affect a compromised immune system. Home birth could mean that the mother is less stressed as she goes through labor, considering she will be in a safe, familiar place.

There are only a few situations where home birth isn’t recommended. Those situations include high-risk pregnancies, serious pregnancy complications, or when the mother is carrying multiples. Of course, if Markle decides on home birth and ends up having complications during labor, she would immediately be transferred to a hospital for close monitoring. Ultimately, many women choose home births because they want to have more freedom in their childbirth journey. For someone like Meghan Markle, who is under intense public scrutiny, it makes total sense that she will want to keep her childbirth experience as private and personal as possible.

Warner Bros. to sue over Trump's use of 'The Dark Knight Rises' music: report - Fox News

Warner Bros. is reportedly planning to take legal action against the White House after President Trump tweeted a campaign video Tuesday featuring music from “The Dark Knight Rises."

The copyright infringement suit will allege that the video uses an instrumental track from the film titled “Why Do We Fall?" Variety reported.

“The use of Warner Bros.' score from ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ in the campaign video was unauthorized,” Warner Bros. said in a statement. “We are working through the appropriate legal channels to have it removed.”

The campaign video, which flows like a movie trailer, opens with aerial views of Washington, D.C. along with subtitles that read “first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they call you racist.”

After a series of shots of Trump at rallies, descending Air Force One along with others of his critics, subtitles read, “Your vote proved them wrong.” A graphic at the end says, “Trump the great victory 2020.”

It shows clips of former President Obama, the Clintons and Trump himself at various events – all against the backdrop of the “The Dark Knight Rises”’ dramatic score. The video also uses the same font as the film's titles, Variety reported.

By 1:20 a.m. EST the video had been disabled "in response to a report by the copyright owner," Twitter wrote. Before it was removed, the video had garnered more than two million views. The White House has yet to comment on the suit.

Lori Loughlin: "Full House" actress and husband Mossimo Giannulli among 16 parents facing new charge today in college admissions scandal - CBS News

Actress Lori Loughlin, her fashion designer husband Mossimo Giannulli, and 14 other parents were hit with a new money laundering charge Tuesday in the college admissions bribery scandal. The announcement comes one day after actress Felicity Huffman and 13 others agreed to plead guilty, signaling an escalation in the case against parents who are fighting the allegations.

The "Full House" star and Giannulli were among 33 prominent parents accused of participating in a scheme that involved rigging college entrance exams and bribing coaches at elite universities.

They were arrested last month on a single charge of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. An indictment brought Tuesday adds a charge of money laundering conspiracy against the couple and 14 other parents.

Trending News

Amy and Gregory Colburn, a California couple accused of paying $25,000 to cheat on their son's SAT, were indicted on the money laundering and mail fraud conspiracy charges last month.

The parents are accused of paying an admissions consultant, Rick Singer, to cheat on their children's college entrance exams and get their children admitted as athletic recruits at such elite schools as Georgetown and Yale.

Loughlin and Giannulli are accused of paying $500,000 in bribes to get their daughters into the University of Southern California as crew team recruits, even though neither of them played the sport.

They appeared in Boston federal court briefly last week and were not asked to enter a plea. They have not publicly addressed the allegations against them. Other parents indicted on the new charge Tuesday include Michelle Janavs, whose family developed the microwave snack line Hot Pockets before selling their company, and William McGlashan, who co-founded an investment fund with U2′s Bono in 2017.

Exploring what motivated parents in college admissions scandal

Huffman, the 56-year-old Emmy-winner who stared in ABC's "Desperate Housewives," was accused of paying $15,000 disguised as a charitable donation to have a proctor correct the answers on her daughter's SAT. She and the 12 other parents agreed to plead guilty Monday to a single charge of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

Prosecutors said they will seek a prison sentence that's on the low end of between four and 10 months for Huffman. Experts said Monday's plea deals are putting legal pressure on Loughlin and other parents who've yet to cooperate with prosecutors.

"Felicity Huffman pleading guilty and giving such a perfect statement of remorse and contrition is a very bad sign for Lori Loughlin … If you go forward and fight this case you really could wind up with a sentence that is a lot of time in prison," said CBS News legal analyst Rikki Klieman.

"By having all these guilty pleas at one time … it's to send a message out there to the remaining defendants that you better get in here and you better get in here quick."

In her first public comments since her arrest, Huffman took responsibility for her actions and said she would accept the consequences.

"My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her. This transgression toward her and the public I will carry for the rest of my life. My desire to help my daughter is no excuse to break the law or engage in dishonesty," she said after her plea deal was announced.

Lori Loughlin indicted by federal grand jury, charged with money laundering - USA TODAY

Actress Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband were among 16 parents involved in the college admissions cheating scam who were indicted by a federal grand jury, which added a money laundering charge to their legal woes, federal authorities announced Tuesday.

The parents, including Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, "were charged today in Boston in a second superseding indictment with conspiring to commit fraud and money laundering in connection with a scheme to use bribery to cheat on college entrance exams and to facilitate their children’s admission to selective colleges and universities as purported athletic recruits," the U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston announced.

Loughlin and Giannulli, who were among a total of nearly three-dozen parents arrested last month on mail-fraud charges in a criminal complaint, are accused of conspiring with scam mastermid William “Rick” Singer, 58, of Newport Beach, Calif., and others, to bribe college officials and coaches, and to artificially inflate entrance exam scores, in order to get their children admitted to elite colleges and universities.

Prosecutors said the second superseding indictment also charges the defendants with conspiring to launder bribes and other payments in connection with the fraud, by funneling them through Singer’s purported charity and his for-profit corporation, as well as by transferring money into the United States, from outside the country, for the purpose of promoting the fraud scheme.

Under the usual procedures, the next step for these 16 parents will  be to appear at an arraignment where they will enter a plea or guilty or not guilty. Then a trial date would be set by the court.

But even before they are arraigned, the parents could still agree to plead guilty under a plea agreement worked out with prosecutors, as 13 parents did Monday, including actress Felicity Huffman.

The announcement of those plea agreements heightened the pressure on Loughlin and those parents who have not done the same. A federal grand jury indictment, with an additional federal charge added to the tally, further bumps up the pressure.

The charge of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and honest services mail and wire fraud provides for a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, plus hefty fines. The charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering provides for a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and heftier fines.

Federal prosecutors in Boston were closed-mouthed about the indictments; grand jury proceedings are secret and prosecutors are barred from discussing them.

However, the process prosecutors are following is routine: If someone is arrested and charged with a crime in a criminal complaint, the government then has 30 days to indict.

The defendants in the college admissions case, dubbed Varsity Blues by the U.S. Attorney's Office, totaled 50, including 33 parents. Most were arrested in their homes on March 12, appeared at federal courthouses in their home cities and were released on bail. They began making their first appearances in federal court in Boston last week.
