Would a Home Birth for Meghan Markle Have Serious Risks? - The Cheat Sheet

Ever since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced they were expecting a baby, the world has been eager for any and all news about the new royal baby. Markle has attracted attention for everything from her chic pregnancy style to her all-natural approach to childbirth.

While the royal couple hasn’t really revealed much to the public about their actual birth plans, a new report suggests that Meghan Markle could take a unique approach to bring her baby into the world. But, are there additional risks?

Markle prefers to keep things natural

Well before her marriage to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was known as much for her love for health and wellness as for her acting skills. Markle likes to stick to organic foods, and reportedly keeps her and her husband’s fridge well-stocked with only the healthiest of treats. She also knows the importance of staying active, and practices yoga, which she is quite familiar with considering her mother is a yoga instructor.

Pregnancy causes many women to feel fatigued, and hardly up to the challenge of walking, much less exercising on a regular basis. Markle definitely doesn’t seem fazed by the struggles of pregnancy and has been traveling the world for her royal duties even while her baby bump grows larger and larger. Markle’s holistic approach to pregnancy includes outfitting the baby’s nursery in the finest materials, including, reportedly, eucalyptus-infused vegan paint on the walls to promote relaxation and calm.

How did Kate give birth?

While this is Meghan Markle’s first pregnancy, her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, is a pro. The Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to three children since she’s been married to Prince William and likely has a lot of great advice for Markle about everything from the actual birth to recovery from labor.

It seems that in one way, at least, Markle’s childbirth experience could differ wildly from Middleton’s. Kate Middleton gave birth to all three of her children at St. Mary’s Hospital, in an exclusive, more private area called Lindo Wing. According to a new report, Meghan Markle is actually considering a home birth, shunning the use of the queen’s doctors to deliver her baby.

Would a home birth be safe for Markle?

Home births are a relatively popular choice in the United States and are catching on in the United Kingdom as well. They are not unprecedented in the royal family either, as Queen Elizabeth actually gave birth to her four children either at home in Buckingham Palace, or her smaller residence, Clarence House. Although home births are growing in popularity, there are still some misconceptions about the process. Many people still feel that home births are unsafe, but there are actually very minimal risks with home births, and in several ways, they can be considered safer than hospital births.

One positive aspect of home birth is the reduced risk of infection. Giving birth in a hospital setting means that the mother and baby are surrounded by hundreds of other people, some that have illnesses or other issues that could affect a compromised immune system. Home birth could mean that the mother is less stressed as she goes through labor, considering she will be in a safe, familiar place.

There are only a few situations where home birth isn’t recommended. Those situations include high-risk pregnancies, serious pregnancy complications, or when the mother is carrying multiples. Of course, if Markle decides on home birth and ends up having complications during labor, she would immediately be transferred to a hospital for close monitoring. Ultimately, many women choose home births because they want to have more freedom in their childbirth journey. For someone like Meghan Markle, who is under intense public scrutiny, it makes total sense that she will want to keep her childbirth experience as private and personal as possible.
