What Harry and Meghan Will Be Like As Parents, According to a Body Language Expert - GoodHousekeeping.com

It's almost time for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to become parents. Of course, only time will tell what kind of parenting style they'll naturally gravitate towards (authoritative? permissive?). But looking at how they've interacted with children in the past offers up some clues, says Patti Wood, body language expert and author of SNAP: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language, and Charisma. We spoke with Patti to find out what the Duke and Duchess' body language around kids reveals about their future parenting styles.

First, let's talk about the bump cradle.

The Duchess of Sussex gently holds her bump like this all the time (anyone who has a problem with it can kindly take a seat), and believe it or not, the way in which Meghan caresses her belly is telling. "I love that she has one arm on top and one arm on bottom, both holding up and cradling her bump," Wood says. "It says that she's going to support — all that energy underneath is supporting — and then on top, she shows tenderness and protection. She's also totally centered on her baby. The hands come out from the heart, so they symbolically represent where the heart is, so the fact that she has her arms and hands wrapped around the baby, on both top and bottom, says, 'This is where my heart is right now.'"

"The other thing that everybody's noticing is that Mona Lisa smile," Wood continues. "It almost says, 'I've got a secret.' It's not a secret anymore, but there's still something about that says, 'I know something you don't know.' There's a bit of impishness to it. It speaks to her playfulness. She's going to be playing with this baby. And we already see that in the way she interacts with children."

Prince Harry also has a fun side, too.

The Duchess isn't the only one who is excited about her impending parenthood. Prince Harry also enjoys the company of children. "In this photo, he's down on the ground, and his eye line is right on the child," she says. "The playfulness comes through in the fact that he's going to get down on the ground and put his hands on the ground, even as a royal. And you can tell it's spontaneous. The energy is forward energy: he's forward on his feet, he's forward at the knees, and his fingers, head, and shoulders are forward. Forward motion shows where you want to be. He wants to be connected to that child."

And what about the big squeeze Markle is giving that lucky kid? "You can see her hand going all the way in, you can see the way it wrinkles pressed against the shirt. If you look at her smile again, she's got an open-mouth, full smile. It's not a tight, I-need-to-smile look. And she's also knees-bent and down to the child's level, which is significant." Her body language shows that she's genuinely enjoying the moment she's having with the kid.

In fact, they often get down to kid level.

And the Duchess does it in heels, too! "It's actually a difficult thing to do, physically, but you can see none of that difficulty showing," Wood says. "It just seems to be very easy for them. If you look at the eye focus, it's very naturally on the children. They're each present with the child they're focused on. Their hearts are centered on the children, too. And, even though their bodies are down on the ground, their upper bodies are stretching up and forward to the kids. It shows that they're going to be able to stay in the moment with their future child." Wood notes that being able to block out the paparazzi and all the hoopla surrounding them to share this kind of connection means they'll be able to really focus on their baby without distraction when the time comes.

How will the baby affect their relationship?

Yep, body language offers some clues here, too! A baby obviously introduces a new element into a marriage, but these two always seem to find a way to have a private moment, even in the public eye. Take this event, for example. "They're both reaching out to touch the horse, so there's there's a physical connection with this beautiful animal, but as they're doing that, the look he's giving her is the chief 'yummy' look," she says. "And there's a little on her face that she's basking in it that glow of him looking at her." Ah, now we know what's behind that Mona Lisa smile.
