‘Avengers: Endgame’ Scores Record-Setting $156.7 Million on Friday - Variety

Avengers: Endgame” is on its way to a record-breaking debut — to put it mildly — with an estimated $345 million from 4,662 North American locations.

The final installment in the Avengers saga landed an enormous $156.7 million on Friday after a stunning international debut on Wednesday, which included a $107 million opening day in China. “Endgame’s” first Stateside day marks the highest opening day of all time, beating out “Star Wars: The Force Awakens'” $119 million. Since “Endgame’s” international debut, which saw openings in 46 markets, the Disney pic has accumulated an estimated $487 million overseas for a global total of $643.7 million.

Some estimates place its three-day haul in a more conservative range, between $310 million and $340 million. “Endgame’s” $156.7 million U.S. opening day marks a 47% increase over “Avengers: Infinity War’s” $106.3 million. “Infinity War” also currently holds the record for largest debut weekend with $257.7 million — a number sure to be obliterated by “Endgame.” The superhero blockbuster has also already broken the record for largest international debut, a distinction previously held by “Fate of the Furious” with $443 million.

“Endgame’s” China total currently stands at $217 million, making it the Middle Kingdom’s highest-grossing three-day start of all time, a title previously held by “Infinity War” with $191 million. The Avengers has been the most successful foreign franchise to date in China, and “Endgame” looks to continue that streak.

Here’s a rundown of all the records “Endgame” will break this weekend for those keeping score at home.

The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The star-studded cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Bradley Cooper and Josh Brolin. The film’s received the third A+ CinemaScore of the MCU, alongside “Black Panther” and “The Avengers,” and sits at a 96% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Meanwhile, a slew of holdovers will fill out the remaining spots at the box office as no one would dare open against “Endgame.” Marvel’s previous release, “Captain Marvel,” should hold down the second place spot with an estimated $9 million. The film surpassed $1 billion at the global box office, with $408 million from domestic theaters.

The second frames of Warner Bros.’ “The Curse of La Llorona” and Fox’s “Breakthrough” will battle for third with an estimated $7 million each, while “Shazam!’s” fourth weekend will round out the top five with about $5 million. “La Llorona” has totaled $65 million globally while “Breakthrough” stands at $28 million. “Shazam!” has taken in $328 million since its debut, marking a win for not-so-gritty superhero flicks.

Idris Elba marries Sabrina Dhowre during three-day celebration in Morocco - AOL

Idris Elba said “I do!”

The British actor and Sabrina Dhowre exchanged vows on Friday at the Ksar Char Bagh hotel during a three-day celebration of their love in Marrakech, according to British Vogue.

Dhowre, a model and former Miss Vancouver, wore a white, off-the shoulder Vera Wang dress for the ceremony before switching into another gown by the same designer – this one, embroidered with pearls, gemstones and lace – later in the night.

Friends and family of the newly-weds kicked off their days of celebration on Thursday with a “colours of souk” themed dinner at the Amanjena. And the festivities will continue on Saturday with an all-white party at the Mandarin Oriental, which will have a festival-like atmosphere.

BACK TO SLIDE

The couple got engaged in front of a crowd during a screening of Elba’s directorial debut, “Yardie” in February 2018, the same year the 46-year-old DJ was crowned “People’s Sexiest Man Alive.”

They met a year earlier while Elba was filming the thriller flick “The Mountain Between Us," which tells the story of a man and a woman – played by Kate Winslet – who get stranded in the wilderness following a plane crash.

“Falling in love while making a moving about falling in love is pretty special,” Elba told People at the time.

Still, he said his public proposal “was the most nerve-wracking thing ever.”

“It was a little spontaneous if I’m honest,” Elba told the magazine. “I was at a cast and crew screening and among people I loved. We had all worked so hard for this project so I was like I’m doing it right now, here, today.”

Idris Elba Marries Sabrina Dhowre In Stunning Moroccan Wedding Ceremony - HuffPost

Idris Elba is a married man!

The “Luther” actor tied the knot with model Sabrina Dhowre in a stunning ceremony at the Ksar Char-Bagh hotel in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Friday.

The British edition of Vogue magazine shared snaps of the happy couple to Instagram Saturday morning.

Elba donned an Ozwald Boateng suit for the nuptials.

Dhowre wore custom-made Vera Wang gowns, per the posts.

Vogue also shared an image of the newlyweds as an Instagram story:

Elba, who People magazine last year crowned its Sexiest Man Alive, met Dhowre while filming the 2017 movie “The Mountain Between Us” in Canada.

He proposed to the model and former Miss Vancouver in Dalston, London, during a February 2018 screening of his first directed movie, “Yardie.”

The couple has stepped out in public together on numerous occasions, such as Prince Harry’s 2018 royal wedding to Meghan Markle:

Elba, who remains hotly tipped to become the next James Bond despite his denials, introduced his then-girlfriend to Prince Charles at a benefit event:

They’ve also appeared by each other’s side at multiple other events in the last year:

Dhowre is Elba’s third wife. He has two children from previous relationships.

Needless to say, Elba’s fans dealt with the news in their own unique ways:

Avengers: Endgame ends a Marvel era. Here's what I want next for MCU - CNET

avengers-endgame-promo-crop

I'm intrigued by what's next for the MCU.

Marvel

With Avengers: Endgame, the first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is over.

The last decade has seen a grand, 22-part opera that revolutionized modern cinematic storytelling. But now this phase, collectively termed the Infinity Saga, is over -- and several of our beloved characters are gone too. This means there's an opportunity to shake things up and really redefine what it means to be an MCU movie moving forward.

Here's what I want to see from the MCU now that Endgame is over.

Warning: Big spoiler territory going forward. Proceed at your own risk.

spoilers-mcu

Fewer CG battles

Countless sci-fi and fantasy films end with massive conflicts between computer-generated armies. From Starship Troopers in 1997 to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, we've long grown bored with faceless, nameless hordes crashing into each other. Just look at DC's Man of Steel to see how boring city-smashing CG can be.

Endgame's ending ambitiously brings together every MCU hero in a final clash with Thanos and his CG pets. It's an even denser retread of Infinity War's final battle, and while visually impressive, it's a jarring departure from the film's earlier intimate focus on the core Avengers. After sharing emotional moments with the characters we've come to love over the last decade, glorified cameos for the likes of Black Panther and the Guardians of the Galaxy make things less relatable, detaching me from the experience.

Seeing all these guys in action is cool as hell, but we don't need to end every superhero movie with a massive battle anymore.

Bring the A-Force to the silver screen

What's the A-Force? An all-female version of the Avengers that appeared in Marvel comics in 2015. For a brief moment, we got a glimpse of what A-Force could look like in Endgame when Scarlet Witch, Shuri, Okoye, Wasp, Valkyrie and Gamora backed up Captain Marvel on her push to return the Infinity Stones to their proper timeline.

Sadly, the team-up was missing a key Avenger. Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow was last seen dead on an alien world -- but she's also set to finally headline her own movie in coming years, so maybe we'll see yet another hero resurrected.

Asgardians of the Galaxy

Thor's journey into space in Ragnarok reinvigorated the series and made me actually care about the Norse god of thunder. Now that Chris Hemsworth has tapped into his comedic side, he hefted around some heavyweight humor in Endgame.

The tease at the end showing Thor joining the Guardians of the Galaxy is just perfect. I anxiously await seeing Hemsworth spar with Chris Pratt's Star-Lord under the direction of James Gunn.

A new Captain America

The peaceful final moments of Endgame saw an aged Steve Rogers pass the baton (or shield) to BFF Sam Wilson. Even Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, gave Wilson the nod. Wilson has taken on the mantle in the comics, so let's see it on screen too.

I'm keen to see the Captain America franchise continue with a character that doesn't have the super-soldier serum, but possesses the same spirit and integrity as the original Cap. Oh, and metal wings are cool too.

Until then, there's still the upcoming Falcon and Winter Soldier show on Disney Plus

Recruit the X-Men and Fantastic Four

Not all Marvel comic book characters are part of the MCU. Previously Fox had its own X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises, but since Disney bought Fox those could now be unified under Marvel.

The Avengers tapped the Quantum Realm for time travel. Maybe they can travel to parallel universes too?

How does Deadpool co-exist with the rest of the Marvel universe?

Fox

But I don't want a clean reboot of the Fox franchises. I'd like to see Marvel Studios find a plausible way to incorporate the existing properties. I'd like to see an MCU where the Fantastic Four and X-Men are already out there, even if those films have proven hit-or-miss. And don't you dare reboot Deadpool.

Standalone stories

This may be a controversial request. Part of the MCU's appeal is the way each movie builds upon the next, with intertwining plot points and Easter eggs for fans. But as much fun as that's been, it also often took focus away from individual films. Watching Captain Marvel, for example, I was bracing to see how it fit in with Endgame.

Sure, let's get the X-Men in there and keep combining characters in interesting ways. But I'd love to enjoy a superhero film as its own standalone experience -- even if it means dialing back on the connections.

The original Iron Man didn't need a cinematic universe to offer a fun time. I'm hoping with the next phase, the fresh start will offer that kind of experience again.

Fingers crossed that the next Marvel movie to hit theaters -- Spider-Man: Far From Home -- will offer just that.

After ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ What Happens Next? - The Ringer

Spoiler alert

Built on the foundation laid by the 21 films that came before it, Avengers: Endgame is a lovely coda for the original heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of them nobly sacrifices himself for the fate of all living things in the universe. Another goes back in time to be with the love of his life. Another, who is now washed, jumps into a spaceship with his buddies, a raccoon and a talking tree. If the MCU was looking for a strong ending, well, they found it—and they didn’t even need any post-credits scenes. But the show does go on.

Just because we’ve (probably) seen the last of heroes like Captain America and Iron Man doesn’t mean the MCU is wrapping things up, or even slowing its pace, anytime soon. In a purely fiscal sense, Disney is making exceptional business off these franchises and will be quite content churning out additional Marvel films for the foreseeable future. And not all the MCU heroes have been hanging for as long as the ones who’ve been sharing the screen since the Obama administration.

But as far as tangible plans go, things are purposefully vague at the moment. Spider-Man: Far From Home, out in July, is confirmed to be the final installment of Marvel’s “Phase Three,” but beyond that there are only a handful of confirmations for sequels (Black Panther 2 and Doctor Strange 2) and the beginnings of brand new franchises (The Eternals), even if there are a lot of untitled MCU movies currently on the Disney calendar. Even the details for projects that are confirmed remain murky. With Endgame finally hitting theaters this weekend, Disney will likely disclose more details about Marvel’s future in the coming months. But where exactly does the MCU go from here? There are a handful of directions, and it’s worth dividing them into two sections: Earth and space.

In a literal sense, Earthbound and space characters are going to be very far apart from one another, but they also should be handling very different plot lines and antagonists—even if the MCU still doesn’t have a good grasp on superpowers. Beginning on Earth, let’s break down what could be in store for the MCU (and Disney+, with some of the characters who’ll return for television series) and which new heroes and franchises could appear in the 2020s before the next Avengers film.

Earth

Presumed Returning Characters: Falcon, Bucky Barnes, Black Panther, Bruce Banner, Black Widow (for her solo movie that is evidently a prequel), Spider-Man, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, the Wasp, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Shuri, Okoye, Wong, War Machine, Nick Fury

Newcomers: Shang-Chi

Earth is still where most of the future Marvel action should take place, as evinced by the many heroes who are still alive and kicking (and probably have a mortgage somewhere on the planet) at the culmination of Endgame. It remains to be seen just how many heroes from MCU’s old guard will actually return, though. Given the events of Endgame, the Black Widow film should be a prequel of sorts, but it’s unclear if the characters getting their own series on Disney+—Bucky Barnes, Falcon, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch—will also return on the big screen. (Additionally, Vision is a costar for the Scarlet Witch series, and yet the paprika-enthused A.I. doesn’t come back at the end of the film, unless they’re saving that revelation for the show.)

Meanwhile, characters like War Machine and the Hulk don’t have a clear path to future MCU appearances, unless they’re intended to piggyback on another franchise—such as Hulk teaming up with Doctor Strange, for whatever reason, in Doctor Strange 2. But given that War Machine was Tony Stark’s bestie, and Don Cheadle is currently living it up on Showtime, perhaps the character’s time in the MCU has run its natural course. Less concerning should be the fates of Ant-Man and the Wasp, as both heroes have played well with audiences and critics through two films.

A Shang-Chi movie—the first Marvel movie with an Asian lead, following a martial arts expert—doesn’t have a release date, but now that they’ve locked down a director in Destin Daniel Cretton, it’s possible this movie could be ready to go in one of Marvel’s 2021 release slots. The character, who hasn’t been cast yet, could be one of the first new heroes introduced in the next “phase” of the MCU, depending how quickly the production process plays out.

But the biggest additions to the MCU are probably a little farther down the pipeline. Since Disney acquired most of 21st Century Fox, it’s also nabbed the rights to the X-Men. Nothing is confirmed, but it feels like an inevitability that the X-Men characters will be eased into the MCU. However, the next few years might serve as a grace period before a full-blown mutant reboot, considering 20th Century Fox still has Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants slated for later this year. And while the Fantastic Four are also a Fox property returning to Marvel, and haven’t had a big-screen adaptation since 2015, it probably doesn’t hurt to create a bit more of a buffer so that people forget the last iteration, which was so awful it temporarily tanked its director’s career.

Deadpool remains an enigmatic x factor. He’s technically part of the Disney family, but if the company finds the notion of cigarette inhalation in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake to be scandalous, there isn’t a character further divided from the current Marvel ethos. If Disney intends to keep the Deadpool franchise and its R rating—the box office returns alone make for a compelling argument that they shouldn’t touch a damn thing with these films—there’s no way he can show up viscerally slicing dudes apart and tossing F bombs in an Avengers movie. We can say with near certainty that Deadpool will still exist under the Fox label; just don’t expect any crossover potential. (If he actually did, that could be the most ambitious crossover event in history.)

Space

Presumed Returning Characters: the Guardians of the Galaxy, Nebula, Thor, Valkyrie, Captain Marvel, my man KORG!

Newcomers: the Eternals (TBD, could begin on Earth)

With James Gunn officially back in the director’s chair for Guardians 3, the movie is going ahead as planned—albeit with a later release date, since the filmmaker has to get through his Suicide Squad reboot first. But when the Guardians franchise returns, it could feature a couple new members. At this point, Nebula—who was a surprising standout in Endgame—is basically part of the crew. But last we saw, they’ve also got Thor.

A lot can change between now and whenever the Guardians 3 production gets going, but Endgame does tease the prospect of Thor joining the Guardians for their next intergalactic adventure. (Whether that also means Chris Hemsworth will continue to put on a fatsuit and embody “The Dude” remains to be seen, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.) Hemsworth has been at this since 2011 and has undeniably earned his Marvel retirement. But holy hell, Fat Thor and the Guardians for an entire movie? You could not inject that into my veins any faster.

While Valkyrie is currently chilling on “New Asgard” somewhere on Earth—a quaint coastal spot that seems to be the same place where Aquaman slammed IPAs in Justice League—a return to the cosmos seems likely. Tessa Thompson has been vocal about a future Valkyrie–Captain Marvel team-up (and potential ’ship), and were that the case, a space adventure seems most likely—if only because Carol Danvers is so preposterously strong it’s hard to imagine her facing any serious existential threats on Earth. Since Thor essentially passes the Asgardian ruler torch to Valkyrie in Endgame, she could be the one handling any Thor-esque plot lines about the Asgardians moving further, were the MCU so inclined.

And finally, there’s The Eternals. Last year, it was announced that breakout indie director ChloĆ© Zhao will direct the film, which focuses on an offshoot of humans (called Eternals, though they are not immortal—might as well call them the Oxymorons!) who were experimented on and imbued with abilities by powerful beings called Celestials. The cast so far includes Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, and Dong-seok Ma. Because little else is known about the film, it’s unclear if The Eternals will begin on Earth before moving on to more psychedelic adventures in the cosmos or keep things grounded for the time being. This is pertinent since the MCU has slowly begun to lean toward more cosmic story lines (the Guardians films, Captain Marvel, Thor: Ragnarok, basically everything with Thanos in Infinity War), and The Eternals could become an ideal extension for intergalactic hijinks.

The questions surrounding the future of the MCU won’t be unanswered for long. The release of Endgame, and trying to keep all the Thanos-related plot lines under lock and key, was the only remaining barrier to Marvel clarity. But this short period of rampant speculation points to a couple things: The MCU can pretty much pursue projects about whatever the heck it wants, from Hawkeye slinging arrows on Disney+ to the Guardians exploring space with Fat Thor—and fans will probably eat up every bit of it.

'Avengers' fans cry foul over Washington Post 'spoiler' headline: 'Shame on you' - Fox News

For the past few weeks, Marvel fans have been attempting to live in an "Avengers: Endgame" spoiler-free world.

Many have been existing in the dark void of social media, Internet browsing, TV, radio, magazines -- essentially anything that can tip them off as to how the iconic comic book movie series ends.

That is until the Washington Post tweeted an article with a very revealing headline that mentions one superhero's farewell specifically. Fox News has not embedded the tweet or written out the headline or linked to the article for obvious spoiler reasons.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH, CHRIS EVANS RECALL FIRST MEETING AHEAD OF 'AVENGERS: ENDGAME' RELEASE

And fans are livid on social media with the media outlet.

"Why in the world would you include this in a headline!?" a user wrote.

"WAPO I DEFEND YOU WITH EVERY OUNCE OF MY BEING BUT THIS IS ENTIRELY UNACCEPTABLE. I FOLLOW YOU FOR NEWS NOT SPOILERS. DAMMIT PEOPLE, WHO APPROVED THIS?" wrote another.

"Shame on you @washingtonpost this is a spoiler!!! What is wrong with you!?!" said another.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH ON ENDING OF MARVEL’S ‘AVENGERS’ SERIES: ‘IT’S BITTERSWEET’

"Too soon, bro. Too soon," joked someone else.

Many other users also used the hashtag #DontSpoilTheEndgame which originated from the movie's directors', brothers Anthony Russo and Joseph Ruso, letter to fans pleading them to guess what? Not spoil the ending for others.

"When you see 'Endgame' in the coming weeks, please don't spoil it for others, the same way you won't want it spoiled for you. Remember, Thanos still demands your silence," they wrote.

The cast has abided by this and even though they're on a massive press tour, they have given no clues about what happens in the final installment.

"Avengers: Endgame" hits movie theaters on Friday, April 26 and is projected to make record-breaking money at the box office in its first weekend.
