Martha Stewart on Lori Loughlin, Felicity Huffman's college admissions scandal: ‘I just feel sorry for them’ - Fox News

Martha Stewart "feels sorry" for actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin who are embroiled in the college admissions scandal.

The business mogul was at the Time 100 gala in New York City on Tuesday when she was asked by “Entertainment Tonight” what type of advice she may have for Loughlin and Huffman “about what may be to come” for the two women.

“I just feel sorry for them and they might have made a bad mistake,” Stewart replied.

FELICITY HUFFMAN COULD AVOID JAIL TIME IN COLLEGE ADMISSIONS SCANDAL: REPORT

Stewart, 77, served time in prison after she was convicted on numerous felony charges. She served five months at a women’s prison in Alderson, W.Va., in 2004. Stewart opened up on her prison stay to Katie Couric in 2017.

“But no one should have to go through that. It’s a very, very awful thing,” she told Couric.

Loughlin and her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, pleaded not guilty last week to charges that they paid $500,000 in bribes to get their daughters into the University of Southern California.

Huffman agreed to plead guilty to a single charge of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. She is slated to appear in Boston on May 21 to enter her plea.

Prosecutors have said they will seek a prison sentence on the low end of four to 10 months for Huffman, who was charged with paying $15,000 to boost her daughter's SAT score.

Britney Spears Has Responded To Conspiracy Theories That Say She's Being Held In A Mental Health Facility Against Her Will - BuzzFeed

There's been a lot of drama, rumours, and conspiracy theories surrounding Britney Spears as of late and tbh, things have gotten a little out of hand.

Gabe Ginsberg / FilmMagic

In case you're not up to speed, it all started when Britney cancelled her upcoming Vegas residency, Domination, back in January. However, only two months after the announcement, Britney said the show wouldn't be going ahead, citing her dad's health issues as the reason behind the decision.

A press release, which said Britney would be taking an "indefinite work hiatus", further revealed that two months before, Britney's dad Jamie had been hospitalised after his colon "spontaneously ruptured". According to the statement, Jamie then spent 28 days in a Las Vegas hospital before being allowed to recuperate at home, where he was expected to make a full recovery.

However, fans were slightly confused by the announcement as only minutes before, Britney's creative team had been tweeting about Domination, seemingly with no idea that it had been cancelled.

Two days later, Britney was pictured out in public with boyfriend, Sam Asghari. Then, she seemingly vanished off the face of the Earth and fans started to become concerned.

Things only got stranger when attorney Andrew Wallet resigned as the co-conservator of Britney's estate. According to The Blast, Wallet stated in court documents: "Substantial detriment, irreparable harm and immediate danger will result to the conservatee and her estate if the relief requested herein in not granted on an ex parte basis."

In early 2008, Britney was hospitalised twice and put on a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold. As a result, Jamie Spears and Andrew Wallet became co-conservators of Britney's estate, putting them in charge of her "medical care, career oversight and any monetary transaction". This conservatorship has stayed in place ever since.

Then, in April, came reports that claimed Britney had apparently checked herself into a mental health facility.

According to TMZ, Britney was struggling as complications with her dad's illness worsened, and as a result, would live in the mental health facility for 30 days.

But eight days ago, podcast Britney's Gram released a "special emergency" episode. In the episode, titled #FreeBritney, a voicemail from an anonymous source was played, alleging that Britney had actually been in the mental health facility since mid-January and did not want to be there.

The source, which Britney's Gram said they had verified, claimed to be a paralegal who, until two weeks before, had worked for an attorney who worked with Britney's conservatorship.

The episode quickly started spreading around the internet, with the hashtag #FreeBritney becoming a frenzy of unconfirmed rumours. But, after months of shunning the spotlight, Britney has reappeared on social media to deny the conspiracy theories and plead with fans to not believe everything they read.

"I wanted to say hi, because things that are being said have just gotten out of control!!!" Britney said in the accompanying caption. "There's rumors, death threats to my family and my team, and just so many things crazy things being said."

She continued:

I am trying to take a moment for myself, but everything that’s happening is just making it harder for me. Don’t believe everything you read and hear. These fake emails everywhere were crafted by Sam Lutfi years ago... I did not write them. He was pretending to be me and communicating with my team with a fake email address. My situation is unique, but I promise I’m doing what’s best at this moment 🌸🌸🌸 You may not know this about me, but I am strong, and stand up for what I want! Your love and dedication is amazing, but what I need right now is a little bit of privacy to deal with all the hard things that life is throwing my way. If you could do that, I would be forever grateful. Love you ❤️❤️❤️

I'm sure at this point, you're asking what emails Britney is referring to. Well, screenshots claiming to be old emails sent by Britney before shooting the "Piece of Me" video have been circulating the internet recently, apparently attempting to prove that she was trying to take charge of her life.

In the Instagram post, Britney claimed the emails were fake and had been crafted by Sam Lutfi, her ex-manager. However, Sam recently took to Twitter to deny this, and even suggested the whole thing was "smoke and mirrors" to hide the real problem.

Sam went on to retweet posts that implied Britney didn't write the Instagram caption.

However, despite Sam Lutfi's tweets, Britney's boyfriend recently told paparazzi that she was "doing amazing".

Regardless of all the rumours and reports, the main thing is that Britney is OK. πŸ’–

Britney Spears tells fans 'all is well' after #FreeBritney campaign - BBC News

Britney Spears has reassured fans over her wellbeing following internet speculation about her safety.

The pop star put her career on hold in January and reportedly sought mental health treatment last month.

It had been suggested online that she was being held at a mental health facility against her will, sparking the #FreeBritney campaign.

In an Instagram video, Spears rejected the theories, saying "all is well" and that she would "be back very soon".

She added: "My family has been going through a lot of stress and anxiety recently, so I just needed time to deal."

The #FreeBritney allegations led to a fan demonstration calling for her "release" outside West Hollywood City Hall on Monday.

In response, Spears urged fans not to "believe everything you read and hear", adding that her family and those working for her had received death threats due to "rumours" that were "out of control".

'Need for privacy'

The singer, who has two sons aged 12 and 13, has been out of the media spotlight since announcing she was putting her planned Las Vegas residency - and the rest of her career - on hold for the sake of her father, Jamie, who suffered a life-threatening colon rupture last year.

Earlier this month, she posted about the need for "me time", in response to reports that she had checked in to a mental health facility to help her process the trauma.

Referencing her recovery in her latest message, she wrote: "I am trying to take a moment for myself, but everything that's happening is just making it harder for me.

"You may not know this about me, but I am strong, and stand up for what I want! Your love and dedication is amazing, but what I need right now is a little bit of privacy to deal with all the hard things that life is throwing my way.

'Jeopardy!' champ breaks record, surpasses $1 million in shortest time ever - Fox News

"Jeopardy!" champ James Holzhauer has just broken another record.

On Tuesday's episode, the 34-year-old surpassed $1 million in the shortest time ever. His $118,816 win put his total take at $1,061,554 million after 14 games.

This is the third separate record Holzhauer has shattered since he started competing on the game show. Last Wednesday, he won the episode with a total of $131,127, topping the one-day record he set earlier in his run of $110,914.

'JEOPARDY!' CONTESTANT SETS NEW SINGLE-GAME CASH WINNINGS RECORD

Before Holzhauer came along, the one-day record was held by Roger Craig on September 19, 2010, when he took home $77,000 in a single game.

What was even more exciting was that Holzhauer’s first record-breaking prize, $110,914, held a special numerical significance — it's his daughter birthday. She was born on November 9, 2014 (11/09/14).

“I said all along that I wanted to break Roger Craig’s one-game record and I did it,” Holzhauer said.

Academy leaves Netflix eligibility rule intact, changes name of foreign language category - Screen International

Oscars 2019 stage 1 c Matt Petit AMPAS

In good news for Netflix, the Academy’s board of governors on Tuesday night (23) kept their eligibility rules intact despite a media storm over Steven Spielberg’s passion for the theatre-going experience, and separately changed the name of the foreign language film category to international feature film category.

Squeezed at the bottom of a press release was the outcome of a vote in Beverly Hills by the board to maintain Rule Two, Eligibility for the 92nd Oscars, stating that films that open in non-theatrical media on the same day as their theatrical release remain eligible for Academy Awards.

In the wake of Spielberg’s comments in defence of the theatre-going experience, and some apparent confusion over what he meant when he talked about Netflix, there had been speculation the board might revise its eligibility requirements, however Tuesday night was not the occasion for that.

“We support the theatrical experience as integral to the art of motion pictures, and this weighed heavily in our discussions,” said Academy president John Bailey. “Our rules currently require theatrical exhibition, and also allow for a broad selection of films to be submitted for Oscars consideration. We plan to further study the profound changes occurring in our industry and continue discussions with our members about these issues.”

Spielberg, an Academy governor, did not attend Tuesday’s meeting. In a written statement to The New York Times earlier in the day, the Oscar-winning director sought to clarify his stance and reportedly said he felt his opinions on Netflix had been overstated. “I want people to find their entertainment in any form or fashion that suits them,” Spielberg said. ”Big screen, small screen — what really matters to me is a great story and everyone should have access to great stories.

“However, I feel people need to have the opportunity to leave the safe and familiar of their lives and go to a place where they can sit in the company of others and have a shared experience — cry together, laugh together, be afraid together — so that when it’s over they might feel a little less like strangers. I want to see the survival of movie theaters. I want the theatrical experience to remain relevant in our culture.”

With regard to the foreign language category, that strand will now be known as the international feature film category. The name change does not come with any alterations to existing category rules, submission process, or eligibility requirements. An international feature film is defined as a feature-length motion picture produced outside the US with a predominantly non-English dialogue track, and can include animated and documentary features. Only one film is accepted from each country as the official selection.

“We have noted that the reference to ‘Foreign’ is outdated within the global filmmaking community,” said international feature film committee co-chairs Larry Karaszewski and Diane Weyermann. “We believe that International Feature Film better represents this category, and promotes a positive and inclusive view of filmmaking, and the art of film as a universal experience.”

The shortlist is expanding to ten films, comprising seven selected by the Phase I International Feature Film Committee, and three more to be voted on by the international feature film award executive committee.

In other rules changes, the release of eight animated features in a calendar year is no longer required to activate the category. Furthermore, going forward nominations voting will be automatically open to all active members of the short films and feature animation branch. Other active voting members of the Academy must opt-in to participate in the nominations round.

The number of nominees for makeup and hairstyling will increase from three to five, and the shortlist is increasing from seven to ten. So-called “bake-off” reels for contenders will not exceed seven minutes in total running time.

In the short film categories, animated and live action short films now have the option to qualify theatrically in either the city of New York or Los Angeles County in order to be eligible for submission.

Individual branch and category committees review rules annually. The awards and events committee then reviews all proposed changes before presenting its recommendations to the board of governors for final approval. The complete 92nd Academy Awards rules are available here.

The 92nd Oscars will take place on February 9, 2020, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Netflix Wins As Academy Leaves Oscar Eligibility Rule Unchanged - Deadline

The Academy Board of Governors tonight made several rule changes for next awards season. Not among them: a rumored reckoning over eligibility for films generated by streaming services like Netflix.

“We support the theatrical experience as integral to the art of motion pictures, and this weighed heavily in our discussions,” said Academy President John Bailey in a statement put out by AMPAS late Tuesday after the organization’s annual Rules meeting had wrapped up.

“Our rules currently require theatrical exhibition, and also allow for a broad selection of films to be submitted for Oscars consideration,” the halfway through his term Bailey added. “We plan to further study the profound changes occurring in our industry and continue discussions with our members about these issues.”

Going into tonight’s meeting of the 54-person board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, pointed criticism that was expressed (and then unexpressed) by Steven Spielberg and others, and a warning expressed by the Justice Department about excluding Netflix seemed to set up a potential confrontation.

Instead, the board  left intact Rule Two, the one that established that a film can be eligible for Oscars if it has a minimum 7-day theatrical run in a L.A. County commercial theater. That theater has to have a minimum of three screenings each of those seven days for paid admission, and that those movies can be released on streaming sites on or after the first day of their theatrical qualifying run.

As it seemed to be all last Oscar season when it instituted and then removed a Most Popular Film Oscar and then hired and lost Kevin Hart as host, the Academy is facing serious decisions in the fast changing way that the world consumes movies.

Tonight, by not excluding Netflix films from competition the way that the Cannes Film Festival did, the Academy has left itself open to the influence of changes that will become more exacerbated as more major studio-backed streaming services get underway.

Therefore what looked to be an increasingly heated showdown between the traditionalists and their love of the theatrical experience and the realities of streaming can be summed tonight up as – later skater.

Looking at what the Academy board did do on Tuesday night as opposed to what it did not do, there were a few self-described “housekeeping adjustments” and more today. The Academy saved its tweaks for the Foreign Language Film and the Animated Feature categories.

The first category will now be referred to as the International Feature Film and the antiquated rule saying that there has to be at least eight Animated features released every year for the second category to be “activated” has been tossed.

For instance, in the Makeup and Hairstyling category, there was almost a doubling of sorts. Going forward the category will have five nominated films instead of three and the shortlist is going up from seven to ten pics. While it won’t mean much to the next Roma, the Short Film categories – Animated and Live Action Short Films – received some bi-coastal love tonight. They now can get a theatrical release in L.A. County boundaries or NYC to be eligible for submission

With that, see you on February 9 2020 at the Dolby Theatre.
