When it comes to Beyoncé releases, there is usually an element of surprise.
The singer — who perfected the secret album drop in 2013, and has since toyed with the tactic for releases like “Lemonade” and “Everything Is Love,” with her husband Jay-Z — did it again in the early morning hours Wednesday, one-upping the arrival of her own Netflix documentary, “Homecoming,” with a previously unannounced live-album version of the same concert.
Both the film and the album, also titled “Homecoming,” capture Beyoncé’s performance at last year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, in which the singer — the first black woman to headline the event — was backed by dozens of dancers and an elaborate marching band for a set that nodded to the musical legacy of historically black colleges.
“There’s not likely to be a more meaningful, absorbing, forceful and radical performance by an American musician this year, or any year soon,” the critic Jon Caramanica wrote of the show in The New York Times. “It was rich with history, potently political and visually grand. By turns uproarious, rowdy, and lush. A gobsmacking marvel of choreography and musical direction.”

Now, the concert — which was live-streamed at the time and recreated for Coachella’s second weekend, but has existed only in bootleg form since — has been preserved for history in multiple mediums. The documentary, a Netflix exclusive billed as “a film by Beyoncé,” features footage from rehearsals and quieter backstage moments — “the emotional road from creative concept to cultural movement,” Netflix said.
The “Homecoming” album is a more straightforward recreation of the concert that became known as Beychella. It breaks the more than two-hour performance into 40 tracks, many of which are packed with multiple musical references and sections of other songs.
Beyoncé’s set list, which varied slightly over the two Coachella performances, included solo hits like “Get Me Bodied,” “Baby Boy” and “Formation,” the Destiny’s Child songs “Say My Name” and “Soldier” (with her former group mates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams) and various interludes with titles here such as “So Much Damn Swag” and “The Bzzzz Drumline.” She also included a rendition of the hymn “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” a song often referred to as the black national anthem.
While some recent Beyoncé releases have been available, at least for a time, only on Tidal, the streaming service owned by Jay-Z, the live album was released across all major streaming platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify and Google Play.
Since Coachella, Beyoncé has been largely quiet professionally, though she toured with Jay-Z last summer, surprising fans with the nine-track collaborative effort “Everything Is Love” along the way. She has not announced a follow-up.
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Wednesday, April 17. All times are Eastern.
Homecoming (Netflix, 3:01 a.m.): This documentary comes with the subtitle, A Film By Beyoncé, and perhaps unsurprisingly, given the name attached, no one even knew it existed a week and a half ago. It would seem that Beyoncé took one look at the calendar, noted the Game Of Thrones premiere and the arrival of Avengers: Endgame—to say nothing of the Star Wars Celebration, Shazam’s release, and the returns of Veep, Barry, and Killing Eve—and thought, “yeah, that seems about right.”
Netflix calls it an “intimate, in-depth look at Beyoncé’s celebrated 2018 Coachella performance,” which “reveals the emotional road from creative concept to cultural movement.” We’re calling it the thing we’re definitely watching tonight. Shannon Miller will review.

The Magicians (Syfy, 9 p.m.): fourth season finale
What We Do In The Shadows (FX, 10 p.m.)
Whiskey Cavalier (ABC, 10 p.m.): We’re always ready to check back in with this fun series with the silly name, if only because our own LaToya Ferguson would never forgive us if it fell totally off our radar.
This seems like as good a time as any to take a look, as this week’s episode features the one and only Dylan Walsh in a guest spot. Set your DVRs, Nip/Tuck enthusiasts and lovers of slightly chewed scenery.

It’s a week of goodbyes for Kevin Hunter.
Wendy Williams‘ estranged husband has served as an executive producer on “The Wendy Williams” show since it launched in 2008, but after his marriage fell apart last week, a source close to the show told Page Six that he’s now negotiating an exit package.
Neither a rep for the show nor its production company, Debmar-Mercury, responded to Page Six’s requests for comment.
As Page Six exclusively reported, Williams filed for divorce from Hunter last week. She addressed the split on Monday’s episode of her eponymous talk show, with Hunter later releasing a statement himself on Tuesday morning, in which he vaguely referenced his alleged affair with Sharina Hudson.
“I have dedicated most of our lives to the business empire that is Wendy Williams Hunter, a person that I truly love and respect unconditionally. I am not proud of my recent actions and take full accountability and apologize to my wife, my family and her amazing fans.”
The ending for Avengers: Endgame has leaked online. As a result, it might be a good idea to mute Avengers-related hashtags on Twitter and just to be generally extra mindful of social media. If you can't stay offline for the next 10 days, and need any other tips to remain unspoiled, we've compiled a list.
Endgame hits cinemas in Australia on April 24 and comes to the United States on April 26, so the leak comes about 10 days before the film's release. Spoilers are always a concern, but the profile is higher with Endgame considering the dramatic conclusion to Infinity War where Thanos snapped his fingers and wiped out half of the galaxy.
Endgame is believed to wrap up more than 10 years worth of Marvel Cinematic Universe storytelling that began back in 2008 with the original Iron Man. The film marks the end of the MCU Phase 3. Marvel is expected to provide the first details on Phase 4 after the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home in July, so keep checking back for that.
Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Brie Larson, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Renner, Danai Gurira, Paul Rudd, and Josh Brolin star in Endgame. Tickets went on sale last week, and so far presales have far exceeded those for Captain Marvel, Infinity War, Aquaman, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi combined.
Actress Lena Headey initially protested her shocking scene with co-star Pilou Asbaek in the Season 8 premiere of “Game of Thrones.”

While most of the action in the episode took place up north in Winterfell, things shifted south to King’s Landing where Cersei welcomed the Golden Company mercenaries (minus their elephants) brought to her by Euron Greyjoy.
Greyjoy has been doing everything in his power to get in the queen’s good graces since Season 7 in the hopes that he’ll be that much closer to power when the war ends. However, power isn’t his only motivating factor. The feared Iron Islander has made it clear that he has a burning lust for Cersei. In the episode, he uses his maniacal charm to convince her to sleep with him despite her initial protest.

“I kept saying, ‘She wouldn’t, she wouldn’t, that she would keep fighting,’” Heady told Entertainment Weekly of her moment with Asbaek’s character. “But [showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] obviously know what they’re doing and were adamant Cersei would do what she had to do.”
Asbaek revealed that there were a lot of conversations behind-the-scenes about the scene and mentioned that it was almost scrapped entirely. However, it made it to the final cut once Heady started to come around to the idea.

“There’s something to play in all of it,” she said. “Cersei is such the ultimate survivor in all of this. She refuses to fall to her knees. She goes to the place where she doesn’t want to go, which makes it more powerful sad because of who she’s not with.”
The actress was referencing her character’s relationship with her brother, Jaime, who was revealed to have impregnated her before leaving for Winterfell himself. As a result, many believe Cersei didn’t yield her power to Euron, but is using him to cover up the fact that her newborn will be her brother’s.

However, the entire relationship is still shrouded in mystery as eagle-eyed fans noticed Cersei drinking wine. It’s unclear if she was lying about being pregnant in the first place, or simply doesn’t know or care about the dangers of drinking while pregnant.
